Michigan voters will be deciding on November 4th whether or not medical marijuana will be legalized. Proposal I would establish marijuana as a type of medication for some illnesses. It’s been known to lessen the pain in diseases such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV, AIDS, and many others. Voters opposed to proposal 1 argue that smoking marijuana is unhealthy and the proposal would promote the recreational use of marijuana. Growing, possessing, selling, or using marijuana is currently against state and federal laws, but Proposal 1 would let registered patients legally grow undetermined amounts of marijuana plants for personal use.

First of all, all drugs, legal or not, are used recreationally. I’m not saying it’s right, but it happens. People use Vicodin, Darvocet, Xanex, Morphine, and all kinds of other legal drugs for recreational use, even though these are all only legal for medical purposes. Also, many legal drugs can be deemed more harmful than marijuana.

Marijuana may be harmful to our lungs and destroy brain cells when used in large amounts, but even if someone does abuse it they cannot die from an overdose. Also, although it can be mentally addicting, it is not physically addicting. Cigarettes are, alcohol is, and so are all heavy painkillers, yet they are all legal. Marijuana is no worse than Vicodin or Darvocetor any other painkiller, and I don’t see any problem with using marijuana medically as long as people don’t go overboard with it.

I think its about damn time this issue came up. I am personally voting yes for medical marijuana. It can help so many different symptoms and diseases that I don’t see why it was made illegal in the first place. Cancer patients who are on chemo and can’t eat because of the terrible side effects smoke some weed and VOILA, they are hungry! That’s just one little example, plus nobody has ever, in the history of earth, died from marijuana. Every prescription out there has killed somebody, but marijuana has not. This has been a major issue for years and we might finally be seeing the start of some reform on this overly abused topic.

I don’t wish suffering on anyone but I will vote no on proposal 1. Yes other drugs are abused and alcohol and cigarettes are legal but I don’t agree with those either. How can we make the world a better place if we start legalizing drugs. If we start, we can’t turn back. We did not come so far in life to start demoting laws. Bending for something is a weakness that druggies will pry on. We need to hold fast so that the future is uncorrupted for further generations.
Just because no one has died from marijuana use, doesn’t make it right. We need laws to set examples and guidelines. Patients know the effects of chemo and it is their choice to go through with it. Cancer isn’t pain free but that doesn’t mean we need to increase crimes and drug rings. We cannot take away all the pain in the world, so don’t bend the rules trying.
